Magnesium plus zinc — together, the pair matters more than one alone

Why 200 mg magnesium oxide/citrate with 20 mg zinc bisglycinate behaves differently as a pair than as singles. The blood sugar and steady-energy angle, and why we put them together in Keel.

Magnesium and zinc are usually sold separately. Taken together, for people eating less or sweating more, the pair shows up as a through-line in papers on steady blood sugar and steady energy.

This is that through-line, and why we dosed it 200 mg magnesium (oxide/citrate) with 20 mg zinc bisglycinate together rather than as two bottles.

What the engine needs

Magnesium is a cofactor for hundreds of enzymes, including those that move glucose into cells. Zinc helps insulin do its work and supports wound healing and taste.

Both are already marginal in many diets. Small meals, sweaty work, and a supplement shelf that favours one mineral over the other all pull the same way.

Why together, not one

In animals, the magnesium + zinc pair has outperformed either mineral alone on insulin signalling, and the pattern holds directionally in small human pilots. The reasoning is practical: if both supports are thin at once, fixing only one leaves the other as the limiter.

Keel's choice: M = 200 mg, Z = 20 mg, chelated. Oxide/citrate for tolerance, bisglycinate chelate for absorption.

How it shows up on the label

Magnesium .... 200 mg (48% DV)
Zinc (as zinc bisglycinate) .... 20 mg (182% DV)

The 48% and 182% look lopsided. They are supposed to. Daily Values are official reference amounts, not personal needs.

Who notices first

  • People eating less because appetite is down for a stretch
  • People who train hard or work hot
  • People whose D and iron are already being watched — the same window

How to take it with care

With food, same time most days. Do not add a second zinc bottle on top without checking the sum — 20 mg here is already above the Daily Value, by design.

If you want the pair inside the rest of the habit: Keel — two caps a day.

FAQ

Can I get this from food alone? In a full, varied diet, yes, at the margin. During a sustained appetite drop, food alone covers a smaller absolute amount, which is when the gap shows.

Is more better? No. Magnesium above ~350–400 mg/day from supplements gets laxative for many people. Zinc above 40 mg/day for long stretches brings its own problems. Stick to the printed dose.
