What this actually is

Berth is the bedtime bottle. Seven things in two capsules: valerian, chamomile, lemon balm and passion flower from the herb garden, GABA and L-tryptophan, and 2 mg of melatonin.

Every one of them has its own line on the label, with its own milligrams. Valerian is the biggest at 150 mg, the melatonin is a modest 2 mg, and the rest are 100 mg each.

Two capsules, sixty in the bottle, so one bottle is thirty nights. Take them with a glass of water once the day is done, then go and find your pillow.*

Where it is made

Made in the United States in an FDA-registered, GMP-certified facility, then packed and posted from Arvada, Colorado. The address on the label is ours, and there is usually a dog in the building.

The short version

Twenty seconds, one capsule with a face.

Pip walks through what is in the bottle and how much of it, straight off the label. Sound is off until you tap it, which we think is only polite.

Per two-capsule serving

Here it is, drawn to scale.

Seven lines, each with its own milligrams. The melatonin bar is the tiny one, which is how 2 mg looks next to 150.

Ingredient, per 2 caps% Daily Value

** Daily Value not established. Other ingredients: gelatin (capsule), brown rice flour.

How to take it.

No loading phase, no cycling, no chart on the fridge. Two capsules and a glass of water.

Step one

Two capsules, one glass of water

Six to eight ounces does it. Before bed, once the day is done. Not before driving.

Step two

Same time, most nights

Pin it to brushing your teeth. Turning up is the whole trick.

Step three

Somewhere cool and dry

Not the bathroom. Skip it if the seal is broken. Keep out of reach of children.

No grogginess at 6 AM

Takes about an hour to kick in

Make sure to take it 60 minutes before your head hits the pillow. Once asleep, I stayed asleep through the night.

The studies behind it.

Four papers worth knowing about, written up in plain English. They test the ingredients rather than this exact bottle, and where that difference matters we have said so.

01

Melatonin, counted in minutes

A meta-analysis pooled 19 randomised, placebo-controlled trials with 1,683 people who had trouble sleeping. On melatonin they fell asleep 7.06 minutes sooner, slept 8.25 minutes longer and rated their sleep a little better.

How strong4/5

The catchMinutes, not hours. It is a nudge towards bedtime rather than a switch, which is why Berth carries a modest 2 mg.

02

Valerian, sixteen studies later

A systematic review found 16 randomised, placebo-controlled studies of valerian covering 1,093 people. In the six that asked the simple question, people taking valerian were 1.8 times as likely to say their sleep had improved.

How strong2/5

The catchThe reviewers saw signs that flattering studies were the ones getting published, and most trials had design problems. An old favourite still waiting for a tidy trial.

03

Chamomile, beyond the teapot

A meta-analysis of 12 randomised trials found that chamomile improved how people rated the quality of their sleep.

How strong3/5

The catchQuality improved. Insomnia itself was tested in one trial, which found no change. So it is the cosy one in the formula, not the heavy lifter.

04

A cup of passion flower

Forty-one adults aged 18 to 35 drank a cup of passion flower tea a day for a week, and a placebo tea for another week, without knowing which was which. They rated their sleep quality higher in the passion flower week.

How strong2/5

The catchThat was one of six things in the sleep diary, and the other five did not move. And it was a tea, where Berth uses 100 mg of extract.

Things people ask.

01When should I take Berth?

Two capsules a day with 6-8 oz of water. The label says daily, and since this is the bedtime bottle, the half hour before bed is the natural spot. Somewhere after the last cup of tea and before the big light goes off.

02What is in Berth, and how much of each?

Per two-capsule serving: valerian root extract 150 mg, chamomile flower extract 100 mg, GABA 100 mg, L-tryptophan 100 mg, lemon balm extract 100 mg, passion flower extract 100 mg and melatonin 2 mg. Every one of them shows its own milligrams on the label.

03Will it make me groggy?

Berth contains melatonin and valerian, so do not drive or use machinery after taking it, and leave yourself a full night. If you feel drowsy the next morning, check with your clinician before carrying on.

04Is Berth vegetarian?

No. The capsule is gelatin. The only other ingredient is brown rice flour.

05Can I take Berth with Haven?

Yes. Haven is magnesium and Berth has none, so there are no totals to add up. Plenty of people like the pair in the evening.

06Should anyone skip it?

Do not take Berth if you are pregnant or nursing, and do not give it to children. Talk to your clinician first if you take sedatives, antidepressants, blood pressure or blood sugar medicine, or blood thinners, because melatonin, valerian and L-tryptophan can interact with them. Do not take it with alcohol.
