How long does ashwagandha take to work?

Ashwagandha may take several weeks to ease stress and improve sleep, depending on the dose and what you are hoping it will do.

Most people notice a change after several weeks of daily use. In trials, stress and sleep outcomes were often measured after 8 weeks, and one anxiety study ran for 60 days. Strength studies also ran 8 weeks. What you notice first depends on the dose and the extract.

That is the trial timeline, not a promise. Herbs are slower than a kettle and quieter than a Monday, so give it a fair stretch before you judge the bathroom shelf.

How long does ashwagandha take to work for stress?

In a 2024 trial in Nutrients, adults with self-reported high stress took a root and leaf water extract for 8 weeks at doses of 125, 250, and 500 mg a day. The researchers used the 14-item Perceived Stress Scale and measured biochemical stress parameters. All three doses safely reduced mild to moderate chronic stress in a dose-dependent way by modulating the HPA axis. So stress is usually an 8-week project in the literature, not a Tuesday afternoon project.

How long does ashwagandha take to work for sleep?

A 2021 meta-analysis in PloS one pooled five randomized trials with 400 participants. The overall effect on sleep was small but significant. The effects were more prominent in adults diagnosed with insomnia, at treatment dosage of 600 mg a day or more, and when treatment lasted 8 weeks or longer. The same review found improvements in mental alertness on rising and anxiety, but no significant effect on quality of life. If you are taking ashwagandha for sleep, plan on at least 8 weeks of consistency before you decide. The fridge light is not going to help you here.

How long does ashwagandha take to work for anxiety?

One randomized controlled trial gave stressed adults 240 mg of a standardized extract once daily for 60 days. Anxiety scores dropped compared with placebo, and morning cortisol fell more in the ashwagandha group. A 2022 meta-analysis also found lower anxiety and stress across 12 trials, though the authors rated the certainty of the evidence as low for both outcomes. 60 days is a reasonable checkpoint for anxiety, and it is about the time it takes us to finish a bag of coffee anyway.

How long does ashwagandha take to work for muscle strength?

A 2015 trial followed young men doing resistance training for 8 weeks. The group taking 300 mg of root extract twice daily gained more bench press and leg extension strength than the placebo group, and they saw bigger increases in arm and chest size. The same group showed a greater decrease in body fat percentage. If you are lifting, 8 weeks is the window the study used, which is roughly one semester of a very patient plant.

What does the research say about ashwagandha?

A 2024 review in Explore looked at randomized trials and found that ashwagandha formulations lowered perceived stress, anxiety, and serum cortisol compared with placebo. Among the included studies, four reported mild to moderate adverse events. The authors said more information is required to determine safety with long-term administration. A 2022 meta-analysis also found lower anxiety and stress, though it rated the certainty of the evidence as low. That is the honest shape of the evidence: helpful, but not finished.

Ashwagandha dosing and timing in trials

The numbers below come from the trials we just talked about, pulled from a 2024 trial in Nutrients, a 2021 review in PloS one, a trial in Medicine, and a 2015 trial.

Focus Daily amount used Trial length What was measured
Stress 125 to 500 mg extract 8 weeks Perceived Stress Scale, cortisol
Sleep 600 mg or more extract 8 weeks or longer Sleep quality, anxiety, alertness
Anxiety 240 mg standardized extract 60 days HAM-A, DASS-21, cortisol
Muscle strength 600 mg root extract 8 weeks Bench press, leg extension, arm size

What should you track while you wait?

You can keep it simple. Rate your stress each Sunday, or note how long you stare at the ceiling before sleep. The trials used scales like the Perceived Stress Scale and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, and they also measured cortisol a 2024 trial in Nutrients a trial in Medicine. You do not need a lab to see a trend, though a notebook helps. We use a fridge calendar because the magnet situation in Colorado is serious.

How much ashwagandha should I take?

There is no single official dose. The trials used different extracts, so the milligram count on one bottle does not map onto another. Look for the withanolide percentage on the label; we explain why here. If you are also sorting out your evenings, chamomile has its own timeline. We happen to make Cove, with 650 mg of organic ashwagandha root and 5 mg of organic black pepper per capsule, one capsule twice a day. That is the whole label, more or less.
